Oily Skin

Based on the answers to the questions, you have Oily/Acne Prone skin.

Your skin type is characterized by excess sebum (oil) production and is prone to blemishes because the pores get clogged with oil and buildup of dead skin cells. Your skin requires more cleansing and exfoliation however, over cleansing can make maters worse by stripping your skin's acid mantle and irritating it. If your skin is stripped of oil it becomes unbalanced and this causes your body's production mechanism to produce additional oil to compensate for the dryness on the surface.

With oily skin, the goal is to balance your barrier function. Your ideal daily routine should consist of the following:

Step 1: Cleanser

The best cleanser for your skin type is a gel based or foaming cleanser. This type of cleanser removes excess oil without compromising your barrier function.

Step 2: Toner

The best toner for your skin type would be an astringent. Astringents have the highest alcohol content and help your oily or acne prone skin to remove excess oil on your skin. Some astringents are too drying, so use in moderation.

Step 3: Exfoliation

Exfoliation is important for any skin type, but for oily or acne prone skin, it's paramount. Alpha Hydroxy Acid(AHA), Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) or mechanical exfoliants such as a scrub or rotary brush (ie: Clarisonic) are the most common ways to exfoliate your skin. Weekly exfoliation is highly beneficial for your skin type, it helps to address blackheads, whiteheads and minor acne breakouts.

Exfoliation should be performed 3-4 times per week to keep breakouts at bay.

Step 4: Mask

The best mask for your skin type would be a clay mask. They are designed o absorb excess oil on your skin's surface and decongest pores. A well formulated mask will leave skin shine-free, but not tight or dry.

If you are experiencing blemishes, select a mask that contain arbutin, vitamin C, bearberry extract and niacinamide. The ingredients help to improve un-even skin tone and will leave your skin glowing.

Masks should be applied 2-3 times per week.

Step 5: Serum

Serums are an excellent source of concentrated actives. Serums can deliver ingredients to the deeper layers of skin, where actives engage biologically.

We recommend using two water-based actives above all others for an oily skin type.

✨Vitamin B3, also known as Niaccinamide: Reduces sebum production, incidences of acne and brightens skin tone.

✨Vitamin C: Vital in skin's healing and repair functions, increases your skin's natural exfoliation rate, reduces hyperpigmentation and prevents its future development, and reduces inflammation caused by acne.

Step 6: Moisturizer

The best moisturizer for your skin type is a moisturizer or facial oil high in linoleates and low in oleic acid. These oils include:

  • Grapeseed
  • Safflower
  • Rosehip
  • Hemp Seed
  • Borage
  • Evening Primrose

You should avoid moisturizers and facial oils that include

  • Coconut
  • Avocado
  • Olive
  • Hazelnut
  • Camellia
  • Sunflower

If you thought you couldn't use a facial oil because of your skin type, you now know you can. A well chosen oil could even reduce the oiliness of your skin.

Step 7: SPF

Use an SPF of 30 or greater 365 days a year. When your skin is compromised from unprotected sun exposure, it makes it less able to hold moisture.
