Sensitive Skin

Based on your answers you have sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin is not a skin type, it is a condition that is caused by environmental stimuli, stress, sun exposure and other unhealthy elements. You can also be genetically predisposed. This skin condition is characterized by fragile, thin skin and redness.

Darker complexions can also have naturally sensitive skin, but it is not visible. Your goal is to create a routine with products that soothe, calm and protect.

Your ideal daily routine should consist of the following:

Step 1: Cleanser

Select a non-foaming fragrance and alcohol-free cleanser to minimize irritation. Milky cleansers and Micellar Water are an excellent choice.

Step 2: Toner

The best toner for your skin type is an alcohol-free toner. Toners with moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, rose water, chamomile, and other soothing ingredients would be more beneficial. If you have eczema, you should avoid using toners.

Step 3: Exfoliation

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) or mechanical exfoliants such as a scrub or rotary brush (ie: Clarisonic) are the most common ways to exfoliate your skin.

When dealing with sensitive skin, it's best to pay attention to your complexion’s reactions to different exfoliants and go from there. When using a scrub use small, circular motions, then rinse off with lukewarm water. If your skin gets bright red and blotchy, you know you’ve scrubbed too hard or you’ve been doing it too often.

Exfoliation should be performed 2-3 times per week.

Every skin type is different and requires different care, so keep that in mind before you exfoliate your sensitive skin.

EXTRA TIP: Leave on a chemical exfoliant for half the time the label says to do the job, minus the irritation.

Step 4: Mask

Masks are an excellent way to target and treat specific skin concerns, like the side effects of sensitive skin (ie: dryness, inflammation and redness), as they “deliver higher concentrations of active ingredients to balance your skin. It's important to keep in mind, that not all sensitive skin types are identical. Some have undue dryness, while others experience excess oil or blemishes. And many sensitive skin types could be looking for something to soothe their rosacea or eczema.

Avoid masks containing sulfates, alcohol, and synthetic fragrance. When removing your mask, don’t rub or scrub your skin. Instead, soak a washcloth in warm water and place it over your skin, then gently wipe away.

Step 5: Serum

Look for ingredients that soothe and calm inflammation, help alleviate dry patches and redness, and strengthen skin to create a barrier against outside irritants like green tea extract, vitamin c and hyaluronic acid.

Step 6: Moisturizer

Typically your skin absorbs water, but when water passes through the skin’s surface (called TEWL: transepidermal water loss), your moisture barrier gets compromised, making your skin more sensitive and dry.

Look for ingredients that contain anti-inflammatory properties like aloe vera and chamomile. Fatty acids like shea butter and hyaluronic acid are also great for hydration.

Step 7: SPF

Use an SPF of 30 or greater 365 days a year. When skin is compromised from unprotected sun exposure, it makes it less able to hold moisture.
